The Culture Junky

I wanted to circle back around to something that I briefly touched on for a recent Monday Morning Culture Shock. I had seen this quote online that really stuck out to me and passed it along several weeks ago (image included at the bottom of this email)

So I wanted to take this time to expand on that sort of quote or mantra if you will.

The quote from writer Ralph Waldo Emerson is: “Fore every minute you are angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.”

Now that, in business, would generally be considered somewhat of an afterthought. The focus is on working, getting things done, and generally being efficient & productive.

But what that sort of old school of thinking fails to keep in mind however is the fact that people are more efficient and more successful when they’re happy at work.

If they’re showing up to work every morning, and they’re just in a bad mood – not happy to be there, just trying to pass the time until they get to leave. Chances are their productivity will be significantly less than what it would be if they were happy at work.

That’s where your culture comes in.

If people are just barely making it into the office and are showing up angry, not only are they less productive, they’re losing out on sixty seconds of happiness.

Those sixty seconds add up.

How many times has the day just sort of gotten away from you and slipped away. Before you know it you’re looking at the clock in the afternoon confused as to where the hours went.

If you spent those hours angry or upset, that’s time you won’t get back.

It might sound obvious but you don’t get that time back.

Don’t let your days be spent angry and miserable.

Don’t let the people in your organization spend their days angry and miserable.

Implement a culture where not only is everyone supportive and engaging in the workplace, but also one that encourages people being there for one another.

When your culture embodies the ‘all for one, one for all’ attitude, you’ll find more of your days are filled with those moments of happiness as you & everyone else are truly happy in your place of work and around each other.

Give that some thought, and have a great Wednesday.
